With the increasing use of English in schools, colleges and work places, knowing the language has become very important. And talking fluently, more so. But learning a different language and mastering its pronunciations isn’t easy for everyone. That’s why we bring you 5 simple tips, following which you can speak like a pro.

1. Listen with full attention
A good listener makes a good learner. To learn to speak well, it is important to listen with full concentration. This will help you catch and understand the finer nuances of the language. Also, English has a few words which sound the same but are spelt differently and their meaning also changes with the change in the context.

 For example:

Week and Weak

Here ’Week’ means the days – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and so on. And ‘Weak’ means feeling low or unwell.

So do remember to LISTEN carefully to learn the correct pronunciation.

2. Notice the movement of your lips
You must have never noticed this before but the way your lips move is the way you pronounce a word. Did you just pay attention to your lips while reading the line? J

Good! The early you begin, the faster you learn.

To speak a word correctly, observe other people talk and try to imitate the movement of their mouth. You can also follow youtube videos or movies and TV shows.

3. Mind your tongue
While speaking, the movement of your tongue plays a very important role in creating the right sound. For example, to make the ‘L’ sound your tongue should touch the back of your front teeth and the top of your mouth, just behind your teeth.

In another example, to make the ‘R’ sound your tongue should not touch the top of your mouth. Pull the tongue back to the middle of your mouth. Now read the word ‘Road’. As you speak, you will feel air blowing between your tongue and the top of your mouth.

4. Break words down into sound
Words are made up of syllables or parts. Dividing words into parts makes it easy to pronounce. So the u to speak a new word, break it into parts, learn the pronunciation for each part and then speak it at once.

5. Record yourself
As you speak, you may not be able to distinguish if your pronunciation is correct or incorrect. To make things easier, record yourself as you speak. For this, you just need to set your mobile’s video recorder at an angle that clearly captures your pronunciations. After this, compare your recording to someone else speaking the same words and improve wherever required.

6. Practice what you learn
Practice makes a man perfect. And it’s true with English too. That’s why, it is always good to speak to a friend or join an online community where you can speak what you learn. As mere memorizing the word will not help you speak correctly.
